The Fine Print / FAQ
Handles are delivered with no finish, with 2 wood wedges, with kerf cut, and with an untrimmed knob. Unless stated otherwise we do not sort for sapwood/heartwood. If you prefer a trimmed knob, mention it in the special instructions box on the cart page. There are 5 examples at the bottom of the Resources page.

Our packing process is set up to provide you with a quality product. Just prior to shipping, handles are carefully inspected and any areas needing attention are marked. After making any corrections, handles are given a final sanding with the grain eliminating any cross grain scratches. Handles are then stamped and boxed in appropriately sized boxes to prevent shipping damage.

We send out a very high-quality, carefully-inspected product that should serve you well. If you want an unbreakable handle, consider steel or fiberglass. That being said, send a clear picture of your un-abused yet broken #1 handle. We may at our discretion replace it, charging shipping costs. We do not offer refunds or exchanges.

#1 handles have grain orientation no more than 20 degrees from center with minimal runout. The majority of our #1 handles have grain orientation closer to 0 degrees than 20. Our #2 handles allow grain orientation no more than 35 degrees from center and may have somewhat more runout. We are somewhat less stringent on grading of straight and house axe handles.

Single bit handles other than scout and New England handles will accommodate a 4" tall eye. Our New England handles have a taller eye suitable for most Tasmanian heads. All eyes are tapered. Full sized eyes are 15/16"+ by 2 ½"+ at the shoulder. Boys eyes are ⅞"+ by 2 5/16"+ at the shoulder. If you are used to "hardware store handles" be aware our handles are thinner through the middle. Please read and understand the descriptions carefully. If you have a head with special needs, smaller or larger, accurately measure the bottom of the eye and contact us. We should be able to help.

We do not recommend the inexperienced to use ash handles for splitting as it does not hold up well to abrasion and overstrike. This said, ash handles are a delight to use in the proper hands.
